Tests the four measurements in one selected Table 407.4.1 car configuration. It does not determine whether an elevator is required or whether the elevator complies with all ADA provisions.

Who it's for: architects and code consultants checking elevator car dimensions against ADA Table 407.4.1 at construction documents or during a permit review.

Scope
Door clear width, side-to-side width, back-wall-to-front-return depth, and back-wall-to-inside-face-of-door depth are separate table values. Controls, signals, timing, leveling, communication, scoping, alterations, and local building-code requirements are not evaluated.

The formula

The checker compares the entered clear dimensions with the selected row of 2010 ADA Standards Table 407.4.1. The centered-door row requires a 42-inch clear door. The other three rows specify 36 inches with the table's permitted minus-5/8-inch tolerance.

Example
A centered-door car with a 42-inch clear door, 80-inch side-to-side width, 51-inch back-wall-to-front-return depth, and 54-inch back-wall-to-inside-door depth meets the four tested dimensions.

When this estimate will be off

  • Does not determine whether an accessible route or elevator is required.
  • Does not check controls, reach geometry, signals, doors, timing, leveling, emergency communication, or other §407 provisions.
  • The 60-by-60 row can also be satisfied by another configuration providing a §304 turning space with the door closed; this preview tests only the rectangular minima.
  • Existing-elevator exceptions are not evaluated.
