Applies IBC 2024 Equation 5-1 after you supply both Table 506.2 values and select the Table 506.3.3 frontage conditions. It does not select an occupancy, construction type, sprinkler column, or adopted code.

Aa = At + (NS × If)
Aa — allowable area for the tested single-occupancy scope
At — applicable Table 506.2 factor
NS — nonsprinklered Table 506.2 factor
If — categorical frontage factor from Table 506.3.3.

Worked example

Example
With At = 36,000 sf, NS = 12,000 sf, 60% qualifying perimeter, and 30 ft minimum open space, Table 506.3.3 gives If = 0.50. Aa = 36,000 + (12,000 × 0.50) = 42,000 sf.

IBC 2024 Equation 5-1 adds the frontage increase as NS multiplied by If; a sprinklered At value must not simply be multiplied by one plus If.

The published 2024 model code assigns If through Table 506.3.3. This preview does not apply the older continuous formula.
