Drawing → real finds the actual size from a paper measurement. Real → drawing tells you how long something plots on the sheet.

The formula

Scale converts a measured length by multiplying or dividing by the scale factor n.

Real = Drawing × n (drawing → real-world)
Drawing = Real ÷ n (real-world → drawing)

n — the scale denominator (e.g. 100 for 1:100, or 48 for 1/4"=1')
Drawing — the distance measured on paper, in any consistent unit
Real — the corresponding full-size dimension, in the same unit

Worked example

Example
On a 1/4" = 1'-0" plan (scale factor 48), a wall measures 2.5 inches on the drawing. Multiply by 48: real-world length = 120 inches (10 feet). Converting back: a 10-foot wall plots as 120 ÷ 48 = 2.5 inches on the same sheet.

When this estimate will be off

  • Input and output use the same length unit — the calculator does not convert between inches and millimetres. Convert first if your drawing measurement and your target answer use different units.
  • Imperial presets express the ratio as a dimensionless factor (e.g. 48 for 1/4"=1'). Any consistent unit works — centimetres, millimetres, or inches — as long as you apply it uniformly across both sides.
  • The custom 1:n field covers metric architectural scales (1:50, 1:100, 1:200, 1:500) and any other ratio, but is not validated against a preset list.
  • Assumes an undistorted print. A scanned or photocopied drawing that has been enlarged or reduced will have a different effective scale — verify against a known dimension on the sheet before measuring.

Frequently asked questions

A common mistake: Input and output use the same length unit — the calculator does not convert between inches and millimetres. Convert first if your drawing measurement and your target answer use different units.

At 1:100, every unit on the drawing represents 100 of the same unit in the real world. A 35 mm line on the page equals 3,500 mm (3.5 m) in the building. It is one of the most common metric scales for architectural floor plans and sections.

1/4 inch represents 12 inches (one foot), giving a ratio of 1 to 48. The calculator applies a factor of 48, so a 1-inch measurement on the drawing equals 48 inches — 4 feet — in reality. The other imperial presets work the same way: 1/8"=1' is 1:96, 1/2"=1' is 1:24.

No. The calculator applies only the dimensionless scale factor — input and output are always the same unit. Measure your drawing in the unit you want the answer in, then enter that value. If you need to switch units, convert the result separately.

A print enlarged or reduced from the original has a different effective scale. Check by measuring a known dimension on the sheet (a noted door width or grid spacing) and comparing it to the drawing label. If they disagree, calculate the actual scale from the known dimension before using this tool.
