Renovate Robotics
Autonomous robot that installs asphalt shingle roofing
Renovate Robotics builds Rufus, a winch-tethered robot that travels a roof in a gantry-like X/Y pattern to install asphalt shingles, letting roofing contractors pair one robot with a smaller on-site crew instead of a full manual tear-off-to-shingle crew for the shingle-installation step.
Why This Tool Exists
Residential asphalt shingle installation is physically dangerous, repetitive work performed on sloped roofs at height; the $60B U.S. residential roofing industry faces chronic labor shortages, and falls are a leading cause of injury and fatality among roofing crews. Founder Andy Stulc started the company after a frustrating 2019 roof replacement on his own house, where contractors were booked out for months.
Rufus is a tethered robot that anchors to a roof and moves along a winch/cable system in an X/Y gantry pattern, unloading shingles from an onboard hopper and nailing them in place. Software takes in roof geometry to generate the shingle layout and nail-placement plan, which a human operator can review before and during installation. A single operator monitors the robot, refills materials, and handles the tasks the robot does not perform (tear-off, underlayment, starter shingles, flashing, ridge caps), while Renovate reports the robot installs shingles roughly 2-3x faster than a solo human roofer on that step.
