Why This Tool Exists

The Problem

AEC teams work in silos with incompatible software creating manual export workflows, version conflicts, and data loss. Design information gets trapped in files rather than flowing across disciplines, slowing collaboration and causing costly rework.

The Solution

Speckle acts as a versioned data hub with live connectors to major AEC tools. Data flows in real-time as objects—not files—syncing Revit, Rhino, AutoCAD, and others instantly. Teams can share, comment, review 3D models via link, and automate downstream processes using GraphQL API or Python SDK.

Exactly what this tool uses and how

Input
What it needs
Required:Design models or geometry from connected AEC tools
Optional:3D PDFs, IFC files, Point clouds, Project schedules (via API)
Formats:Revit (.rvt), Rhino 3DM, Grasshopper (.gh), AutoCAD (.dwg), IFC (.ifc), SketchUp (.skp), Blender (.blend), Power BI (.pbix), Excel (.xlsx)
Output
What you get
Format:Versioned object graph database with interactive 3D viewer, webhooks, and API access
Fields:3D model geometry, BIM parameters and properties, Project structure and hierarchy, User comments and version history, Permission metadata, Change logs
Algorithm
How it works
Model:Not AI-driven. Uses object graph versioning architecture inspired by Git for geometry/BIM data with hash-based deduplication
Accuracy:Not applicable (deterministic data structure, not ML-based)
Privacy
How your data is protected
Retention:Project versions stored indefinitely unless user deletes account. Personal data retention: 12 months standard, 4 years for business relationships (per GDPR Article 32)
Training:Not publicly specified. Default assumption: User data not used for model training (standard SaaS practice)
Compliance:SOC 2 Type 2 certified (2024), GDPR compliant, Data encryption at rest (LUKS) and in transit (TLS/SSL), Point-in-time recovery (PITR)
API
Integration
Endpoint:GraphQL API at speckle.systems/graphql (cloud) or self-hosted instance
Method:GraphQL with REST API legacy support
Webhook support available

Use Cases

  • ·Real-time multidisciplinary coordination between architects, engineers, and constructors
  • ·Interactive 3D model reviews and presentations without requiring design software licenses
  • ·Automated downstream workflows (cost estimation, schedule linking, fabrication prep)
  • ·Design-to-construction data handoff without manual IFC exports or re-modeling
  • ·Geometry and parameter extraction for business intelligence (Power BI dashboards)
  • ·Object-oriented parametric design workflows with live federation
