The formula

Airflow ratio = scheduled exhaust airflow ÷ verified required exhaust airflow.
Difference = scheduled − required.
No hood type, airflow, makeup air, duct, or suppression-system size is calculated.

Worked example

Example
A listed hood design requires 2,400 CFM and the mechanical schedule shows 2,500 CFM. The arithmetic ratio is 1.042 and the difference is +100 CFM. This does not validate capture and containment or system compliance.

When this estimate will be off

  • Does not classify cooking effluent, select Type I or Type II, determine whether a hood or suppression system is required, or establish exceptions.
  • Does not size exhaust, makeup air, ducts, fans, grease removal, clearances, controls, fuel/power interlocks, extinguishing agent, piping, or nozzles.
  • Does not validate the hood or suppression-system listing, appliance arrangement, capture and containment, commissioning, inspection, or maintenance.
  • A scheduled airflow no lower than an entered requirement is only a document comparison, not code or performance approval.
