Why This Tool Exists

The Problem

Architects and visualization professionals need to produce accurate, photorealistic renders for client presentations but struggle with render engines that use approximations and shortcuts, resulting in inaccurate lighting, unrealistic materials, and images that don't reflect true design intent.

The Solution

Maxwell uses unbiased spectral ray-tracing — simulating light exactly as physics dictates — to produce ground-truth photorealistic images without tricks or approximations. Plugins for Rhino, SketchUp, ArchiCAD, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Maya, and form·z allow rendering directly from existing design workflows, while Maxwell Cloud provides on-demand cloud rendering on 80-core machines.

Exactly what this tool uses and how

Input
What it needs
Required:3D scene geometry, Lighting setup, Maxwell materials (MXM)
Optional:BIM/CAD model from host application, Camera settings, HDRI environment maps, RealFlow particle data
Formats:MXS (Maxwell Scene), OBJ, FBX, DWG, DXF, IFC (via host app), native formats from all supported plugins
Output
What you get
Format:High-resolution rendered images and compositing layers
Fields:Final rendered image (EXR, PNG, JPEG, TIFF), MXI (Maxwell Image) file with all render layers, Multiple render channels: alpha, Z-depth, shadows, material IDs, object IDs, motion vectors, Deep compositing data in EXR/DTEX format, Multilight sets for post-render light adjustment without re-rendering
Algorithm
How it works
Model:Unbiased spectral ray-tracing based on Metropolis Light Transport variation; no AI/ML components
Accuracy:Unbiased renderer converges to ground-truth physical accuracy with sufficient sampling; no approximations or tricks by design
Privacy
How your data is protected
Retention:Maxwell Cloud: render jobs retained for 30 days then deleted; job metadata (time, sampling level) retained until user deletes
Training:User data not used for model training (no ML components in render engine)
Compliance:GDPR (Next Limit commits to data confidentiality per Maxwell Cloud documentation), dgeCOMPLIANCE noted on website (scope not specified)
API
Integration
Endpoint:SDK available (C++ and Python); no REST API documented
Method:C++ SDK (maxwell.h, maxwellrender.h, maxwellmxi.h) and Python SDK (pymaxwell)

Use Cases

  • ·Photorealistic architectural visualization for client presentations and competition submissions
  • ·Interior design rendering with physically accurate materials and lighting
  • ·Product design visualization requiring ground-truth material accuracy
  • ·Design development studies: daylighting, material options, and lighting scenarios without re-rendering via Multilight
  • ·Cloud batch rendering of large animation sequences or multiple design options on-demand
