Q-Bot

Robot-applied spray-foam insulation for hard-to-reach underfloor voids

Q-Bot is a UK robotics company that sends a remote-operated crawler robot through a small access hatch into the underfloor void beneath suspended timber or concrete ground floors, 3D-scans the space, and sprays closed-cell polyurethane foam insulation onto the underside of the floor without lifting floorboards or displacing occupants. Originally an autonomous-surveying and robotics R&D platform (multiple granted and pending patents in void mapping and navigation), the company's primary commercial product today is contractor-delivered underfloor insulation retrofit for UK homeowners, landlords, local authorities, and housing associations, offered either robotically or by hand depending on access.

~$14.5M-$19.8M total reported across 13+ rounds since 2014 (aggregators disagree: Tracxn reports $14.5M, PitchBook reports $19.8M); includes a £3M Series A in June 2019 led by Foundamental with Wealth Club and EMV Capital (matches the Foundamental-sourced seed fact for this record), and a €4M raise announced September 2023 raisedGrowth Stage
Founded 2012 · Vendor states 5,500+ homes insulated to date and work with 40+ UK local authorities and housing associations, including Peabody, Clarion Housing, The Guinness Partnership, Torus, Nottingham City Homes, and Ealing, Camden, and Oxford City Councils; a self-reported 9.3 NPS from customer surveys. A third-party aggregator (Tracxn, not independently verified) cites 200+ homes/month installation rate and 60% revenue growth over a recent 12-month period. Employee counts vary by source (21-55 across PitchBook, Companies House, and LinkedIn).

Why This Tool Exists

The Problem

Millions of UK homes have suspended timber or concrete ground floors with no insulation, losing significant heat through the floor and causing cold draughts. Traditional retrofit means lifting floorboards or working from inside the home, which is disruptive, slow, and often impractical for occupied social housing, making floor insulation one of the most under-delivered measures in national retrofit programs.

The Solution

A tracked crawler robot enters the underfloor void through a small existing or newly cut access hatch, builds a 3D map of the void with an onboard laser scanner as it moves, and then applies closed-cell spray foam to the underside of the floor in operator-guided passes, with insulation thickness monitored during spraying. The work is completed entirely from beneath the building in 1-2 days with no floorboard removal, and where robotic access is not feasible Q-Bot installs the same foam system manually.

Exactly what this tool uses and how

Input
What it needs
Required:Underfloor void access hatch (existing or newly cut), Property address and floor type for survey scheduling, Paid site survey (Premium or Premium PLUS) confirming void depth, ventilation, and access
Optional:Existing EPC certificate, Funding-scheme eligibility details (ECO4, Great British Insulation Scheme, Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, Home Upgrade Fund) for cost offset, Portfolio-level building data for multi-property landlord/local-authority programs
Formats:On-site laser/point-cloud scan (proprietary robot sensor format), PDF survey and compliance reports, 3D models exportable to Revit and COBie (Q-Bot Technology survey product only)
Output
What you get
Format:Physical spray-foam insulation installed under the floor, plus digital survey/compliance documentation
Fields:Insulation thickness applied (target approx. 12cm), verified during spraying, Modeled thermal performance improvement (vendor claims up to 80%) and airtightness improvement (vendor claims approx. 31%), EPC rating impact (vendor claims up to 5-point improvement), Installation/compliance certificate for warranty, Insurance Backed Guarantee, and funding-scheme purposes, 3D point-cloud/void model and floor plan (Q-Bot Technology survey product)
Algorithm
How it works
Model:Proprietary robotic navigation and 3D laser-scanning system with deep-learning point-cloud processing (model architecture not publicly disclosed); covered by 9 granted and 25+ pending patents per vendor
Accuracy:Vendor claims up to 80% improvement in floor thermal performance and approx. 31% improvement in airtightness, stated as independently tested by the Energy Saving Trust; no independent, peer-reviewed benchmark found for the robot's spray-thickness or mapping precision specifically
Privacy
How your data is protected
Retention:Per Q-Bot's published privacy notice, personal/customer data is retained for 5 years from the end of the financial year (31 March) in which the service or quote was completed
Training:Not publicly specified whether jobsite scan/sensor data is used to train Q-Bot's robotics or computer-vision models
Compliance:UK GDPR / Data Protection Act compliance per published privacy notice, TrustMark registered installer (Ref TMRN439), KIWA BDA accredited insulation material, Insulation Assurance Authority (IAA) 25-year Insurance Backed Guarantee option, No SOC 2, ISO 27001, or other IT security certification publicly disclosed
