Twinmotion

Real-time architectural visualization from BIM and CAD models

Twinmotion is Epic Games' real-time 3D visualization application built on Unreal Engine. It imports models from BIM and CAD authoring tools through Datasmith plugins and lets architecture, engineering, and construction teams generate real-time renders, walkthroughs, VR views, and 360-degree panoramas from those models without manual re-modeling.

Why This Tool Exists

The Problem

Design teams need to turn BIM and CAD models into real-time, photorealistic visuals and walkthroughs for internal review and client presentation, without exporting to a separate rendering pipeline for every design iteration.

The Solution

Twinmotion uses Datasmith File Import or Datasmith Direct Link plugins to bring models from supported design applications into a real-time Unreal Engine environment, where users apply materials, vegetation, lighting, and context, then produce real-time views, path-based walkthroughs, VR exports, and image/video output that can be resynchronized as the source model changes.

Exactly what this tool uses and how

Input
What it needs
Required:Model from a supported BIM/CAD application (Revit, Archicad, SketchUp Pro, Rhino, 3ds Max, Vectorworks), Datasmith File Import or Datasmith Direct Link plugin for the source application, Twinmotion account (free tier eligibility or paid seat)
Optional:Twinmotion asset library content (materials, vegetation, people, vehicles), Custom HDRI/environment settings, Twinmotion Cloud subscription for cloud rendering/collaboration
Formats:.udatasmith file, Live Datasmith Direct Link sync, FBX/glTF/other formats via supported import paths documented by Epic
Output
What you get
Format:Real-time 3D scenes, rendered still images, videos, 360-degree panoramas, and VR-ready exports
Fields:Rendered image sequence or video, Interactive real-time walkthrough scene, 360-degree panorama export, Synchronized scene state when using Direct Link
Algorithm
How it works
Model:Unreal Engine real-time rendering pipeline (Epic Games), not a generative-AI model.
Accuracy:Visual output reflects the imported model geometry and applied materials; Twinmotion does not perform code, cost, or constructability analysis and vendor documentation does not describe it as a modeling or QA tool.
Privacy
How your data is protected
Retention:Not publicly specified for local Twinmotion projects; Twinmotion Cloud data handling should be verified against current Epic Games account and cloud-service terms before uploading confidential project data.
Training:Not publicly specified in reviewed Twinmotion sources whether imported project models are used for any Epic Games model or product training.
Compliance:Governed by the Twinmotion EULA and Epic Games account terms; project-specific review required before use with confidential client data
API
Integration
Endpoint:No public Twinmotion end-user API found in reviewed sources; Datasmith plugin SDKs are documented for source-application integration, not for third-party API access to Twinmotion itself.
Method:Not publicly documented

Use Cases

  • ·Generate real-time walkthroughs and presentation renders from a Revit, Archicad, SketchUp, Rhino, 3ds Max, or Vectorworks model
  • ·Keep a Twinmotion visualization scene synchronized with an actively evolving BIM model via Datasmith Direct Link
  • ·Produce VR-ready and 360-degree panorama output for client and stakeholder review
  • ·Build landscape and site-context visualizations alongside architectural models
