A path that is 35 inches wide fails the ADA accessible route standard. That is one inch short of the 36-inch minimum that §403.5.1 requires for every walkway connecting accessible elements. What is an ADA accessible route?

An accessible route is a continuous, unobstructed path connecting accessible elements and spaces within a site and building, required by ADA Standards §402 wherever accessible elements, spaces, or facilities exist. The path must comply with §402’s requirements for surface, slope, width, and clearance throughout its entire length. A single non-compliant segment breaks the entire route. Accessible routes may consist of walking surfaces, doorways, ramps, curb ramps, elevators, and platform lifts, per §402.2. The route must coincide with, or occupy the same area as, the general circulation path, per §206.3. Accessible routes are not a separate back-of-house path. The ADA standard places accessible travel on the same path everyone else uses. That requirement eliminates the longer, indirect accessible routes that older facilities sometimes provided to satisfy minimum code while separating users by mobility status.

A manual wheelchair occupies approximately 25 to 27 inches in width. The 36-inch clear width provides maneuvering room on each side. Narrower paths force wheelchair users to steer precisely over long distances, causing fatigue and collision with edges. The 1:48 cross-slope limit at 2.08% controls lateral drift. A wheelchair on a steeper cross-slope requires constant corrective force to hold a straight line. On long paths, that force accumulates into a physical burden that reduces independent mobility. Where are accessible routes required?

Accessible routes are required at four categories of connection, governed by ADA Standards §206.2 wherever a building or site serves the public. First, at least one accessible route must connect each site arrival point (public sidewalks, parking areas, public transportation stops, and passenger loading zones) to an accessible building entrance, per §206.2.1. Second, at least one accessible route must connect all accessible buildings, facilities, elements, and spaces within a site, per §206.2.2. Third, at least one accessible route must connect each story in a multi-story building, per §206.2.3. An exception applies to buildings with fewer than three stories, or fewer than 3,000 square feet per story, for certain occupancy types. Fourth, at least one accessible route must connect accessible building entrances with all accessible spaces and elements inside, per §206.2.4. Missing a single connection fails the route.


What is the clear width exception for accessible routes?

The clear width exception is a one-time reduction to 32 inches (815 mm) minimum, permitted by ADA §403.5.1 for a segment no longer than 24 inches (610 mm), provided those segments are separated by zones at least 48 inches (1,220 mm) long and 36 inches (915 mm) wide. The exception exists to accommodate single structural or architectural obstructions: a column base, a wall reveal, a door jamb. The exception does not permit multiple consecutive narrow segments. Each 32-inch segment must be separated by a full-width 36-inch zone of at least 48 inches. Designers who apply the exception to long, continuously narrowed corridors with racked shelving, equipment, or furniture lines are applying it incorrectly. The exception is a point relief, not a corridor-width standard. A corridor holding 32 inches through its full length fails §403.5.1 with no exception available.


What are the passing space requirements?

A passing space is a widened zone along a path, required by ADA §403.5.3 wherever the clear width of the walking surface is less than 60 inches (1,525 mm), at intervals of 200 feet (61 m) maximum. The passing space allows two wheelchair users traveling in opposite directions to pass each other. The passing space must be either 60 × 60 inches (1,525 × 1,525 mm) minimum, or a T-shaped intersection where the base and both arms extend at least 48 inches (1,220 mm) beyond the intersection, per §304.3.2. Routes that are 60 inches wide or wider throughout do not require separate passing spaces. The route width itself satisfies the passing requirement. In long single-loaded corridors at 36 inches wide, the 200-foot interval requires passing space alcoves or widened segments at regular intervals. Missing those intervals is a common plan review correction on healthcare and education projects.


What are the 180-degree turn requirements?

A 180-degree turn around a narrow element requires wider dimensions than the standard accessible route, as required by ADA §403.5.2 wherever an accessible route turns 180 degrees around an element less than 48 inches (1,220 mm) wide. The approaching width must be 42 inches (1,065 mm) minimum. The width at the turn must be 48 inches (1,220 mm) minimum. The departing width must be 42 inches (1,065 mm) minimum. If the clear width at the turn reaches 60 inches (1,525 mm) minimum, the §403.5.2 requirements do not apply. The route is wide enough that the turn geometry is self-satisfying. The 180-degree turn condition arises most often at switchback corridors, end-of-aisle conditions in libraries and retail, and returns around structural walls. Most designers who fail this condition in plan check sized the 48-inch turn width correctly but missed the 42-inch approach and departure.


What are the surface and level change requirements?

The accessible route surface must be stable, firm, and slip-resistant, as required by ADA §403.2 and §302 at all points along the walking surface. Level changes on the route are regulated by §303. A vertical change up to 1/4 inch (6 mm) is permitted without edge treatment. A change from 1/4 inch (6 mm) to 1/2 inch (13 mm) must be beveled at a slope no steeper than 1:2. Any change greater than 1/2 inch (13 mm) must be ramped per §405. Expansion joints, thresholds, and transitions between flooring materials are the most common sources of non-compliant level changes. A tile edge proud of an adjacent floor by 5/8 inch fails §303 and requires either grinding flush to 1/4 inch or installing a beveled reducer. The surface standard applies to all accessible route components, not only to exterior paths where grading is the concern.


What are the protruding object requirements on accessible routes?

A protruding object is any element whose leading edge falls between 27 inches (685 mm) and 80 inches (2,030 mm) above the finish floor, governed by ADA §307.2 wherever the object projects into the circulation path. Objects in that height band may protrude no more than 4 inches (100 mm) horizontally into the path. Handrails are the one exception: handrails may protrude 4½ inches (115 mm) maximum. Post-mounted objects (signs, displays, equipment on pylons) may overhang 12 inches (305 mm) maximum when the object sits between 27 inches and 80 inches above the floor, per §307.3. Objects below 27 inches are detectable by cane and carry no horizontal projection limit. The minimum vertical clearance on accessible routes is 80 inches (2,030 mm) per §307.4. Where clearance drops below 80 inches, a guardrail or barrier with a leading edge no higher than 27 inches must be installed to warn cane users.


What are the common mistakes on accessible routes?

Narrowing the route with furnishings or equipment. ADA §403.5.1 measures clear width in the as-built condition. Furniture, equipment, and displays that reduce clear width below 36 inches after occupancy create violations that the permit drawings did not show.

Using 1:20 slope for the entire site without checking cross-slope. A path graded at exactly 1:20 running slope often has cross-slopes that exceed 1:48 at drainage transitions. Running slope and cross-slope are independent measurements. Both must comply simultaneously.

Forgetting passing spaces on long single-width corridors. A 36-inch corridor longer than 200 feet requires widened passing zones at 200-foot intervals per §403.5.3. Healthcare and education corridors are the most frequent setting for this omission.

Treating the 32-inch exception as a corridor standard. The §403.5.1 exception permits a 32-inch segment up to 24 inches long, not a reduced-width corridor. Multiple consecutive narrow points each require full separation between them.

Missing 180-degree turn widths. Switchback routes require 42-inch approaches and 48-inch width at the turn, per §403.5.2. Designing only the turn at 48 inches without widening the approach and departure is a partial compliance.
