Two capacity factors from §1005.3 apply to all calculations. Non-sprinklered buildings use 0.3 in/occ for stairways and 0.2 in/occ for all other egress components. Buildings with both a full NFPA 13/13R sprinkler system and an emergency voice/alarm communication system (§907.5.2.2) qualify for reduced factors: 0.2 in/occ for stairways and 0.15 in/occ for other components. Both systems must be present. Group H and Group I-2 occupancies are excluded from the reduced factors regardless of installed systems; always use 0.3 and 0.2 (§1005.3.1 and §1005.3.2 Exception 1).
What egress width actually measures
Egress width is the minimum clear dimension for each component in the means of egress: stairways, corridors, doors, ramps, and exit passageways. Clear width is measured between finished wall surfaces, door faces, or handrail faces where projections occur. IBC §1005.4 requires that width be maintained continuously along the full egress path.
IBC Chapter 10 sizes egress components in two ways. The capacity method (§1005.3) starts from the occupant load and produces a required width. The prescriptive method sets minimums that apply regardless of occupant load: §1011.2 for stairs, Table 1020.3 for corridors. Both apply simultaneously; the larger number governs.
Where a building requires two or more exits, the 50% redundancy rule (§1005.5) applies: loss of any one exit cannot reduce available capacity below 50% of total required. Each exit must be capable of carrying at least half the total occupant load, not just the load it typically serves. A stair that handles 40% of normal flow may fail this test even if it is compliant in isolation.

Illustrative example: A non-sprinklered Group B office floor has 200 occupants. Stair width from capacity: 200 × 0.3 = 60 inches. Prescriptive minimum: 44 inches. Capacity governs; stair must be 60 inches. Corridor width from capacity: 200 × 0.2 = 40 inches. Prescriptive minimum: 44 inches. Prescriptive governs; corridor must be 44 inches. The same floor produces two different governing rules for stairs vs. corridors.
Real buildings have multiple stories, mixed occupancy types, sprinkler conditions, and convergence points where floor loads combine.
How travel distance shapes exit path layout
Travel distance is the maximum walking path from any occupied point to the entrance of the nearest exit, measured along the actual route: around furniture, along corridors, through door openings. IBC Table 1017.2 sets the limits by occupancy group.

Group B offices jump from 200 to 300 feet; Group F-2 and S-2 jump from 300 to 400 feet. High-hazard (H) and most institutional (I) occupancies are not permitted on unsprinklered egress paths.
Dead-end corridors compound the problem. IBC §1020.5 limits dead-end length to 20 feet in non-sprinklered buildings; sprinklered buildings in Groups B, E, F, I-1, M, R, S, and U may extend to 50 feet. Dead-end length is measured from the farthest point in the dead end to where the corridor connects to another exit access path, not to the exit door itself.
Common mistakes when sizing egress paths
Applying the 0.15 factor without both systems. The reduced factor for non-stair components requires both NFPA 13/13R sprinklers and an emergency voice/alarm system (§907.5.2.2). Sprinklers alone do not qualify for the component reduction. (§1005.3.2 Exception 1)
Ignoring stair convergence. Where egress from upper and lower floors meets at a shared level, the stair at that level must serve the combined occupant load of the two adjacent stories, not just the largest floor alone. (§1005.6)
Treating 44 inches as sufficient in all cases. The prescriptive minimum is a floor, not a ceiling. In high-occupancy spaces, the capacity calculation can produce a larger governing width: 200 occupants × 0.3 in/occ = 60 inches, which overrides the 44-inch prescriptive.
Not accounting for door encroachment. IBC §1005.7.1 permits a fully open door to encroach up to 7 inches into required corridor width. A 44-inch corridor with a 36-inch door leaf narrows to 37 inches during swing, a violation of the 44-inch minimum.
Measuring travel distance as a straight line. IBC §1017.3 requires measurement along the actual walking path. Straight-line measurement underestimates distance in open-plan offices and U-shaped floor plates where the actual path wraps around workstations and partitions.
