IBC 2024 Corridor Width Requirements: 36 vs 44 Inches, Dead Ends and Capacity

Under IBC 2024, the general corridor minimum is 44 inches. Table 1020.3 permits 36 inches where the corridor serves fewer than 50 occupants, subject to the table's special conditions and the separate egress-capacity check.

Under the 2024 International Building Code, the general minimum corridor width is 44 inches (1,118 mm). IBC Table 1020.3 permits 36 inches (914 mm) where a corridor serves an occupant load of fewer than 50, and it requires larger widths for specified occupancies and uses. The corridor must also provide any greater width required by the egress-capacity calculation in Section 1005.

Corridor width is only one part of the egress analysis. Dead-end length, door encroachment, exit-access travel distance, accessibility, and local amendments are separate checks.

What is the minimum corridor width under IBC 2024?

Table 1020.3 establishes the minimum corridor widths for the model IBC. The most commonly used rows are:

The fewer-than-50 condition is strict: an occupant load of 49 can qualify for the 36-inch row, while an occupant load of 50 does not qualify through that row. Other listed conditions can still require a different minimum.

Use the occupant load served by the corridor, not a convenient room count or the number of people expected during ordinary operation. Start with the applicable occupant-load calculation, then trace which occupants use the corridor.

Corridor minimum and egress capacity are two different tests

Table 1020.3 provides a prescriptive minimum. Section 1005 separately requires enough capacity for the occupant load served. The final required width is the larger result after all applicable conditions are evaluated. The egress-capacity guide explains that calculation separately.

The reduced factors of 0.2 inch per occupant for stairs and 0.15 inch per occupant for other components are conditional. They require the qualifying automatic sprinkler protection and emergency voice/alarm communication conditions stated in Sections 1005.3.1 and 1005.3.2. They are not available for Group H and Group I-2 occupancies.

Example: corridor serving 300 occupants

For a non-stair egress component using the base factor:

300 occupants × 0.2 in/occupant = 60 inches

Although the general Table 1020.3 minimum is 44 inches, the 60-inch capacity result governs in this example. This does not establish that every 300-person corridor can be approved at exactly 60 inches; special occupancy rows, convergence, accessibility, door projections, and adopted amendments still require review.

How are obstructions and door encroachment handled?

Section 1020.4 requires the minimum corridor width to be unobstructed, except for permitted projections. Door encroachment is governed through Section 1005.7.

Under Section 1005.7.1:

  • a door leaf can project into the required egress width by no more than one-half at any point in its swing; and
  • when fully open, the door leaf can reduce the required width by no more than 7 inches (178 mm).

Therefore, a fully opened door that leaves 37 inches within a 44-inch required width does not fail solely because of that seven-inch reduction. The entire opening, swing, accessibility, and egress arrangement must still comply with the other applicable provisions described in the egress-door guide.

When must a corridor have a fire-resistance rating?

Corridor width is a separate question from corridor construction. Under Section 1020.2, corridors serving as an exit-access component must be fire-resistance rated in accordance with Table 1020.2, and where a rating is required, the corridor walls must also comply with Section 708 as fire partitions.

The required rating in Table 1020.2 depends on the occupancy, the occupant load served by the corridor, and whether the building has an automatic sprinkler system. Two illustrative rows:

  • A Group R corridor with an occupant load above 10 is Not Permitted without an automatic sprinkler system; once sprinklered, it carries a 0.5- or 1-hour rating, depending on the table’s footnote conditions.
  • A Group A, B, E, F, M, S or U corridor serving an occupant load greater than 30 needs a 1-hour rating without sprinklers, reduced to 0 hours (unrated) with an automatic sprinkler system.

Section 1020.2 has five exceptions. The first four remove the rating requirement for the corridor; the fifth only concerns openings in an adjacent exterior wall:

  1. Group E corridors, where each instructional room has a door directly to the exterior and at least half the required assembly egress doors also open directly to the exterior (ground level).
  2. Corridors within a dwelling unit or sleeping unit in Groups I-1 and R.
  3. Corridors in open parking garages.
  4. Group B corridors in a space that requires only a single means of egress under Section 1006.2.
  5. Where a corridor runs along an exterior wall, that exterior wall may have unprotected openings if Table 705.5 permits the wall to be unrated and Table 705.9 permits unprotected openings. This does not waive the required rating of the corridor’s other walls.

Confirm the occupancy, occupant load served, and sprinkler condition before assuming a corridor needs no rating — the table sets the default, not the exceptions.

What is the maximum dead-end corridor length?

IBC 2024 Section 1020.5 establishes a general maximum dead-end length of 20 feet (6,096 mm). It then provides specific exceptions; sprinkler protection does not create a universal 50-foot allowance for every occupancy.

A designer must identify the occupancy and the exact exception before using anything longer than 20 feet. The 50-foot sprinkler exception specifically names the eligible occupancy groups and Section 903.3.1.1 protection.

What are the IBC exit-access travel-distance limits?

Exit-access travel distance is a separate measurement from dead-end corridor length. Table 1017.2 establishes maximum travel distances by occupancy and sprinkler condition.

Table 1017.2 contains footnotes and conditions that can affect a project. Measure travel distance along the natural and unobstructed path of horizontal and vertical egress travel as required by Section 1017.3; do not substitute a straight-line dimension through walls, furniture, or other barriers.

A practical corridor review sequence

  1. Confirm the adopted code edition and local amendments.
  2. Classify the relevant occupancy and actual functions of the spaces.
  3. Calculate the occupant load and identify the load served by the corridor.
  4. Select the applicable minimum-width row in Table 1020.3.
  5. Calculate egress capacity under Section 1005 and use the larger governing width.
  6. Check obstructions and door encroachment under Sections 1020.4 and 1005.7.
  7. Check common path, required exits, dead ends, and exit-access travel distance separately.
  8. Coordinate accessibility, special occupancy, and locally adopted requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can an IBC corridor be 36 inches wide?

Yes, Table 1020.3 permits a 36-inch minimum where the corridor serves an occupant load of fewer than 50 and within dwelling units. Other table rows and the Section 1005 capacity calculation can require more width.

Is a 44-inch corridor always enough?

No. Forty-four inches is the general prescriptive minimum, not a universal final answer. Capacity, special occupancy conditions, accessibility, and adopted amendments can require a wider corridor.

Does sprinklering reduce the 44-inch corridor minimum?

Not automatically. Sprinkler protection can affect capacity factors and specific dead-end or travel-distance provisions, but Table 1020.3 must still be applied. The reduced Section 1005.3 capacity factors also require the specified emergency voice/alarm communication condition and are unavailable for Groups H and I-2.

Does every sprinklered building get a 50-foot dead end?

No. Section 1020.5 limits the 50-foot sprinkler exception to the listed occupancy groups and the specified Section 903.3.1.1 system condition. Other exceptions have their own scopes.

What is the difference between a dead end and travel distance?

A dead end is a portion of an exit-access corridor from which egress is possible in only one direction. Exit-access travel distance is the total path from the most remote point to the entrance of an exit. Both can apply to the same route, but they are measured and regulated separately.
